A fine Rosewood mantel clock by the well know makers Paul Garnier and Henry Marc. It’s difficult to explain why this clock is so rare, but we will try. Paul Garnier invented a type of escapement for his clocks which allowed the clocks to be pendulum free. This escapement is called the Chaff Cutter, two plane escapement and was in use on most of the early carriage clocks he made. There are very few clocks which have survived with the Chaff Cutter intact. What’s lovely about this particular clock is the small viewing glass to the top, essentially showing off his invention. The ‘blanc roulant’ was supplied to P.G. by Henry Marc. A blanc roulant is a movement sold to a clockmaker to finish with his or her escapement of choice. The clock is quite sall and constructed of Rosewood with fine boxwood inlays and marquetry work. The dial is a mellowed gold colour and the hands are the original and quite unique. A very rare and attractive clock. Quite possibly 1830 to 1850.

A good and quite rare, mid 19th Century Series 3, Paul Garnier carriage clock with push repeat and strike on a bell. An engraved ‘corniche’ style case with shuttered rear door and earlier style handle. The dial showing Roman numerals with trefoil hands and the name with Hrl du Roi (Horologer to the King- Louis Philippe I -1830-1848). The movement is signed on the back plate in the usual top left position. The classic Garnier style hammer striking the bell. The clock is P.G. number 2444. This clock retains the all important ‘Chaff Cutter’ escapement and the original thick bevelled White glass. The clock will run for a week, but for better timekeeping we recommend a mid week wind too. A good example of a Paul Garnier carriage clock with alarm function . The dial is signed by Paul Garnier and the back of the dial plate is stamped Henri Jacot in the classic Oval. The gilt case is in superb condition. The bevelled glass is all in good order with only a minor mark on the top glass. The maker Paul Garnier is the Son of ‘the’ Paul Garnier who was responsible for the development of the early carriage clock industry which in turn spawned makers like Henri Jacot who ironically ended up supplying Garnier! Paul Garnier is a name very entrenched with French carriage clock production and invention. The father ‘Paul Garnier Senior’ pioneered some of the earliest portable clocks after Breguet. This watch is retailed by his son who carried on the family name and dates to around the 1970’s. The 29 Jewel movement is a Cal 2416 (Russian) and of very high quality.
